UK policy

Self-management is a key part of the government’s policy for improving the health and social care of people with long-term medical conditions. In the policy paper published by the Department of Health in 2005, self-management was described as ‘collaboratively helping individuals and their carers to develop knowledge, skills and confidence to care for themselves and their conditions’.

Many different self-management programmes are being developed, and people’s views and experiences about living with their condition and disability are now being used to design the content of these programmes.

The first stage of self-management often involves learning more about the condition and how best to manage it.
